Quick answer: is this Medium carrier worth considering?
The Sherpa Original Deluxe Medium, Black, is worth considering for a small dog that fits comfortably inside and for an owner who values more than one loading opening. Its practical appeal is a portable soft-sided format with a removable liner. Its main limitation is that neither a size label nor an airline-related marketing claim can establish suitability for your particular pet and trip.
This review covers the Black Medium version linked through Amazon ASIN B000FLETX8. We have not flown with it, tested escape resistance or evaluated crash protection. Our assessment uses published product details, attributed owner feedback and an airline’s current guidance to identify the checks that matter before buying.
Put it on your shortlist after confirming both pet fit and transport requirements. Reconsider it if you need a carrier for a pet that damages soft materials, a certified vehicle-restraint system or automatic acceptance on every flight. Those are separate requirements that this review does not establish.
The exact model and dimensions
| Identity check | Reviewed version |
|---|---|
| Brand and product | Sherpa Original Deluxe Travel Pet Carrier |
| Size and color | Medium, Black |
| Manufacturer SKU | 55231 |
| Amazon ASIN | B000FLETX8 |
| Listed carrier dimensions | 17 × 11 × 10.5 inches |
| Listed pet weight ceiling | 16 pounds |
| Fit decision | Measurements and usable room before weight alone |
The US listing provides the dimensions and weight ceiling. The manufacturer page identifies SKU 55231 for Black Medium. The carrier’s outside dimensions should not be treated as its exact interior living space.
Check the selected variation, quantity and included accessories before ordering. Another Sherpa model may look similar while having different dimensions or features. This review does not transfer a successful trip in a Large carrier to the Medium version linked here.
Pet fit comes before the space under a seat
Start with your dog’s measurements and the position they naturally take when resting. The number on a scale cannot tell you whether a long-bodied or tall dog has enough room. Do not interpret being below the listed weight ceiling as an automatic pass.
Once you have the carrier, assess usable space with its intended liner in place. Your dog needs an appropriate amount of room for the journey; an empty bag’s outline does not show how it feels with the pet inside. Avoid choosing a smaller size simply because it appears easier to fit into a transport space.
Keep the two decisions separate. First, can your pet use the carrier comfortably under the applicable requirements? Second, does the carrier meet the transport provider’s conditions? Passing only one of those checks is not enough to make the purchase suitable.
If the fit is unclear, seek advice from the manufacturer and, where comfort or health is a concern, your veterinarian. This article cannot determine whether a particular dog should fly or how long that dog can tolerate confinement. A product selection should follow that decision, not force it.
What the openings and structure contribute
Sherpa lists top and side entry, mesh ventilation panels, locking zippers, a spring-wire frame, an adjustable shoulder strap and a removable machine-washable liner. It describes a rear section that can flex for under-seat placement. These are manufacturer features, not results of our own handling tests. See the product description.
Two openings give you a choice of how to introduce and load the carrier, but do not guarantee that a reluctant pet will accept it. Think about which opening you would use in a secure room and which would be convenient during an ordinary appointment.
Do not confuse a flexible frame with permission to reduce the pet’s usable space without limit. The pet and carrier must still meet the relevant travel requirements. We have not measured how far this carrier compresses in a particular aircraft seat.
The shoulder strap and handles also deserve a practical trial. Consider the loaded weight, the distance you expect to carry it and any other luggage you will have. A comfortable strap in an empty product photograph does not predict your experience during a long walk through a terminal.
Fit comparison: ordinary outings and flight planning
| Your requirement | Assessment | What remains to check |
|---|---|---|
| Portable carrier for a comfortably fitting small pet | Worth considering | Usable space and your carrying routine |
| More than one loading opening | Documented feature | Whether your pet accepts the process |
| Guaranteed acceptance on every flight | Not established | Airline, aircraft, itinerary and reservation |
| Resistance to persistent chewing or scratching | Not tested here | Your pet’s behavior with soft materials |
| Crash protection in a vehicle | Not established here | Evidence specific to that safety purpose |
This compares uses of one model rather than ranking every travel bag. The correct decision may be to postpone purchase until the airline or pet-fit question is resolved. A conveniently sized carrier is only useful when it suits the actual journey.
Airline wording is a starting point, not a boarding decision
For an example of why details matter, Delta’s pet-travel guidance recommends a soft-sided carrier size that fits most aircraft, rather than presenting one universal size for every aircraft. Consult the operating airline for your exact trip. We do not certify this Sherpa for any itinerary.
Ask about the pet reservation, the operating aircraft and the under-seat allowance applicable to the journey. If your itinerary has connections, review each segment instead of checking only the first flight. A booking involving more than one operator can require more than one conversation.
Keep the current response and relevant policy details with your travel documents. Recheck if the flight or aircraft changes. An old review describing successful boarding is useful context, but cannot replace the current operator’s requirements.
The product name also references Sherpa’s Guaranteed On Board program. We have not verified enrollment or reimbursement eligibility for a particular purchase or trip. Read the current program terms directly before relying on that claim, including any conditions and paperwork that may apply.
Introduce the carrier before the departure deadline
Allow time to learn whether your pet will approach and settle in the carrier without turning the first attempt into a rushed loading task. Place it in a familiar secure area and give the pet an opportunity to investigate. A travel purchase should not arrive so late that returning an unsuitable size becomes impractical.
Separate the steps of entering, closing and carrying. If you change all three at once, it can be difficult to understand what caused an uncomfortable response. Keep early attempts short and stop if the situation is not going well.
Do not assume a pet that rests inside an open carrier is ready for a long journey in a closed one. That first response is encouraging information about familiarity, not proof of travel readiness. Plan the next step around the individual pet rather than a fixed schedule from somebody else’s story.
If the pet repeatedly tries to damage the enclosure or cannot settle, seek individual guidance before proceeding. This review does not recommend medication or sedation, and a more expensive bag is not automatically the answer to travel distress.
Inspect and rehearse the carrying routine
Before loading your pet, inspect the closures, mesh, seams, handles and frame. Open and close each entrance so you understand the fastening arrangement. If a part appears damaged or does not operate as expected, resolve it before relying on the carrier.
Practice handling the empty carrier and placing it in the area where it will be used. Check that you can reach the closures without awkwardly tipping the bag. Then, when appropriate, try a brief attended carry with your pet in a secure setting.
Watch how the carrier sits when you put it down and how its contents are supported. Keep external pockets organized so you are not searching around the pet during a stressful moment. Supplies should be accessible without blocking ventilation or crowding the pet’s space.
A luggage or seat-belt pass-through is a handling feature, not evidence of crash-test performance. We have not verified this model as a crash-protective restraint. Choose equipment with appropriate evidence if that is the primary reason for purchasing.
What readable owner feedback contributes
On Chewy’s Original Deluxe page, Kayla’s April 9, 2020 review values the two openings and removable mat, while noting an initial material smell. Lila’s August 13, 2020 review describes appreciating the structure and introducing the carrier at home. Jamie’s March 18, 2025 review reports a successful airline trip, but explicitly used a Large carrier.
These are individual reports across pets, colors and sizes. They do not form a verified Black Medium sample, and the older reports may not describe current production. A successful Large-carrier journey is not evidence that this Medium version will be accepted on your flight. We confirmed Amazon’s listing identity but did not obtain a dependable set of individual Amazon reviews.
Our interpretation is to inspect the actual item early and allow time for introduction. The readable accounts offer useful questions about access and handling, not guaranteed comfort, security or airline approval.
Cleaning and storage after the trip
The manufacturer specifies a removable machine-washable liner. Do not extend that instruction to the entire carrier. Check the supplied directions for the outer structure and other components rather than assuming everything can go through the same wash cycle.
Inspect the carrier after use, including less visible areas around seams and the base. Remove personal items from pockets before cleaning or storage. Let cleaned components dry as directed before putting the carrier away.
Store it where the mesh and frame are not likely to be damaged by other objects. Before the next outing, repeat the condition check rather than assuming the carrier remains ready because the previous trip went well.
Keep the model details and purchase record together. If a repair, replacement component or care question arises later, the exact version is more useful than the general description small airline bag. It also prevents accidentally applying instructions from another Sherpa design.
Before opening the selected Amazon offer
Confirm Original Deluxe, Medium and Black in the current offer. Check the seller, shipping, return conditions and what is included. We verified the product identity, not a continuing stock level or a particular seller’s delivery promise.
Do not wait until checkout to resolve pet fit or flight acceptance. The ability to buy a carrier online is separate from its suitability for the journey. Leave time to inspect and, if necessary, return the actual item.

Frequently asked questions
Does a dog below sixteen pounds automatically fit?
No. Weight is only one limit. Measurements, usable space and the pet’s ability to meet the relevant travel requirements still matter.
Is it accepted by every airline?
No universal acceptance is established here. Confirm the carrier and pet arrangement with the operating airline for the actual itinerary and aircraft.
Can I use another owner’s flight report as approval?
No. Their carrier size, aircraft, route and timing may differ. Use the current operator’s requirements for your own booking.
Is the whole bag machine washable?
The documented machine-washable component is the removable liner. Follow the product instructions for the rest of the carrier.
Is this review a crash-safety assessment?
No. We have not verified crash protection for this model. A carrying strap or pass-through feature does not establish that performance.
Verdict and further reading
Consider the Black Medium Original Deluxe when your pet fits comfortably, the transport requirements are confirmed and the loading options suit your routine. Reconsider it when you need a guarantee that the available evidence does not provide.
